The death knell of Evangelicalism

When president Trump was elected, he had the support of the majority of evangelical Christians in the USA. President Trump was the most unchristian president the USA had ever seen.

In Brazil, Bolsonaro has the support of most of the evangelical Christians. He is the ‘Trump of the tropics’. He is on his way to destroying the environment and has the support of the ruling class of Brazil’s billionaires.

What is happening here? I believe that this is what is happens when one worships Jesus and then does not pay attention to what he said.

In seminary, I wrote a 485-page master’s thesis which today I would entitle, “How Jesus of Nazareth became the Christ of faith”.*  As one studies the gospel accounts, it is possible to arrive at a reasonable picture of Jesus. He was by all accounts a spiritual visionary, he sided with the poor, and he was peaceful. Over time as initiated by St. Paul and followed through by the church fathers, the person of Jesus evolved into the Christ of faith. As he was exalted to a person to be worshiped his teachings became secondary. When Constantine, the Roman emperor converted to Christianity in 325 AD, church and state were wedded. When this happens, the state rules and the church can easily acquiesce and give support to the state.

That is what is happening today as evangelical Christianity gives its support to the most unchristian of state leaders.
