You can feel it in the air. Change is coming whether we heed it or not. We cannot continue to trash the planet as we are doing. Social and income inequality cannot continue to reach record heights.
So, what might change look like? It will either be planned and rational, or violently forced upon is by relentless nature. The future will be multi-faceted and complicated. We will need to make personal changes and system changes. Here is a list of the actions needed.
Personal
lifestyle changes
- Go vegetarian
- No more fossil
fuel cars, go EV
- Get rid of
single-use plastic containers, instead use glass, paper and reusable containers
- Use mass transit
- Reduce
population growth
- Reduce air
travel, increase Zoom meetings
- Protect trees
and plant new ones
- Grow and eat
more local foods
- Install solar panels
whenever possible
- Use air
conditioners as little as possible, instead use nighttime cool air and use
basement cool air.
- Bicycle and walk
more
- Use all your
clothes and appliances longer – repair when needed
- Declutter, get
rid of unnecessary things
- Consume less,
buy less
- Fix it up,
rather than buy a new one
- Eat less, exercise
more
System
changes
- Lobby government
to stop subsidizing and funding fossil fuels, and instead support renewable green
energies
- Lobby governments
to cut back drastically on military spending
- Demand that governments
drastically revise tax laws; institute a realistic progressive tax structure
whereby ultra-rich tax evasions are eliminated, and the wealthy pay their share
for the changes that are needed
- Use nuclear energy
power plants until they expire, but don’t build any new ones. Instead, use the
money saved to develop renewable energies.
- Only develop renewable
energy. Keep fossil fuels in the ground, except for limited hard plastics.
Impossibly complex,
you say? It won’t happen, you say. Yes it will, either by revolutionary planned
revisions or by catastrophic events that will force to us to change our ways.
Take your pick.
