Response to "Why free countries must support Israel" (Ottawa Citizen, May 27, 2021)

The recent article entitled “Why free countries must support Israel” (Ottawa Citizen, May 27, 2021) misses the main point. The root of the problem with Israel and Palestine is that Israel is occupying Palestinian land and is mistreating Palestinians.

I have been to the region several times, beginning with visits for the Oslo Peace Accord. I have seen Israeli policy and actions against the Palestinians first hand. Peaceful Palestinians are constantly harassed by Israelis. Their lands are confiscated and Israeli settlements are built on them, their farms are taken, their olive crops are destroyed, they are subjected to stones and other projectiles thrown at them. They are forcefully ejected from their houses, their movements are constantly restricted and curtailed. The policy of this “democratic” Israel is to harass them and harass them until they leave, and then take their land.

During the period of the Oslo Peace accord, in direct violation of this agreement, Israeli settlements on Palestinian land DOUBLED. This was confirmed to me by an Israeli opposition group, The Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD).

There are many other Israeli organizations opposing the present Israeli government policy towards the Palestinians (Rabbis for Human Rights, B’Tselem, Women in Black, Tayoush, Peace Now, to mention only a few).

Mr. Fegelman, the director of Honest Reporting Canada, seems to have conveniently omitted some very important facts about the Israeli-Palestinian problem.
