It all begins with disinformation – or is it misinformation?

Let’s begin by defining the difference between misinformation and disinformation. Misinformation is false information that one spreads because one believes the information to be true. Disinformation is false information that one spreads even though one knows it to be false, i.e., an effort to deceive people. 

The FC began as a protest against mandates, which were implemented to try to deal with the growing spread of COVID-19. Soon, other groups tagged on to it to advance their own agendas. There were even demands to overthrow the government. Some claim that this latter goal was the organizing source of the movement.

If distrust of government in its attempt to impose COVID restrictions was at the heart of this movement, then this resistance to COVID restrictions has morphed into the various grievances mentioned above. It led to a mass protest at Parliament Hill, aided and abetted by truckers who were against mandates for truckers crossing the USA-Canada border. The result was the well organized, well funded activities we saw in Ottawa.

In my view, this all started with misinformation about the necessity to have vaccinations to counteract COVID transmissions and infections. If this is so, then opposing this misinformation is the best way to oppose these obstructive tactics.
